The poet x page 1 to 62

I read the Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo, pages 1-62. The story takes place in New York City. The main characters are Xiomara Batista, Mami, Papa, Xiomara's twin brother, Father Sean, Aman, Ms. Galiano, and Caridad.

At the beginning of the book, Xiomara is a sophmore who lives in Harlem. Her parents, Mami and Papi, had Xiomara and her twin brother Xavier, who she calls "Twin". Throughout the beginning, we find out that Xiomara's mother is very religous. This makes Xiomara religious as well, but she questions it. She expresses her feelings about this by writing. At school, Xiomara is told about a poetry club that meets on Tuesdays after school. X feels that she can not do this because of her confirmation classes on Tuesdays. X gets an assignment from Ms. Galiano, asking to write about the most impactful day of her life so far, and she describes her 12th birthday and her first notebook that Twin got for her. Xiomara then goes to play basketball with Twin and Caridad. X realizes that she is staring more towards the opposite sex. Xiomara feels that this is wrong though. Towards the end of page 62, Father Sean, X's priest, talks in church about how women are sinful.

I like this book so far because Xiomara is a strong girl and likes to have a mind of her own. Also, I like that the book gives off strong emotions of strength and wisdom. Lastly, I like that Xiomara lets herself make her own rules and that she is does not like to let people define who she is and how she turns out as a person.

  1. This book sounds interesting because of how Xiomara acts as a character in the beginning of the book. It seems that throughout the beginning, she is trying to find herself and the kind of person she is.

  2. I would like to read this book because I want to know that how she will be taking a stand for herself and realize that it's not bad to attract to people who are opposite of your sex.
