This section of the book covers what happens to Samantha as the FBI interrogates her kidnapper Isreal Keyes. At first, Keyes doesn't cooperate with the FBI and constantly denies that he took Samantha even though he was in possession of her stolen debit card. With little evidence to even show him other than a scribbled ransom note Keyes had written himself earlier in the case the FBI is worried that Keyes may be able to get away with everything and are frantically trying to get him to confess to the crimes so that he won't just be freed before they can even get information from him. The FBI then asks Heidi Keyes(Israel's mother) about the disappearance of Samthana and if she knew anything about it to which she responded "if God wants that girl to be found, she'll be found" although she does agree to answer a couple of questions about Isreal. With little evidence to go against Isreal, the team works to expedite him back to Alaska while Heidi was being interviewed. Heidi doesn't seem to be surprised about her son being involved with crime and told the FBI that he vanished mysteriously last time he visited her to "hide guns" she also says that it seemed Israel's mental health had been decreasing recently. While Isreal is transported to Alaska Payne works hard on setting up a room for interrogation with the ability to record audio while also having the video for other headquarters to watch in on the interview. The area is set up and all the leads on the case have set up a plan to make Keyes think they have more information on him than they actually do. Everything was going fine until they got a call from the US attorney's office telling them a man named Kevin Feldis would be taking over the interrogation. This created a big problem because Kevin's interview skills compared to Payne or rather anyone else on the case was that of a child to Sherlock holmes. Also, the interviews now had to be conducted at the attorney's office where no video or audio recorders were built into the room and where prosectors were not allowed to lie. Keyes agrees to confess to the crimes if they agree to give him the death sentence and keep his family out of it. Keyes confesses to the murder of Samantha but didn't go into detail refusing to speak any more about it without the lead of the case Bell there. In this time Feldis had already revealed the lack of information they had leaving Keyes confused on what he should tell them and if he should even tell them anything as he started to realize just how little they had against him. Once Bell arrives Keyes goes into gruesome detail about what exactly happened to Samantha and what he did to her. After they have all the information and recover Samantha from a nearby lake Keyes surprises Bell by confessing that there's many other people he has killed over the year and will confess to her as long as they don't get spread by the media and his death wish happens after he is done.
I find this section of the book very interesting because all the suspense that is built in the first part of it leads to this chapter. Just when you think you have all the information about Keyes he reveals that this is only one of many murders he has committed over the years. I also like how it emphasizes just how little the FBI knows and that if Keyes hadn't confessed himself they may have never found out what happened to Samantha and certainly wouldn't have found out about any of the other missing people. I am very curious about what will happen to Keyes next and how many other people have gone missing as a result of something he has done.
Your chance to rant, rave, and talk about the books you are reading. It's obvious we are a family of readers...this is our trainwreck of a dog, Roxy, that my daughter likes to dress up...she is now named "Harry Pooper"
